The Aurora - a window into the near-Earth space environment

The aurora is light that comes from the Earth's upper atmosphere. That light is generated by atmospheric atoms and molecules that have been "hit" by particles (electrons and protons) coming from further out in space. Those particles come down the Earth's magnetic field lines, stike the upper atmosphere, give energy to atmospheric atoms and molecules, making them glow.
